Flowers have always held a special fascination for me, particularly in the way they die. As a flower ages its colors begin to fade at their centers but intensify at their tips. This is very much a metaphor for how humans age. We are fading at our physical centers, but through experiences, we are intensifying at our spiritual tips. The society that we live in today does not appreciate this experience and is obsessed with youth and physical beauty. I have chosen to paint flowers very near their final hours in order to show that although they have lost a certain type of beauty they once possessed, they have become beautiful in an entirely different way. So it can be with all of us. Tablescapes appeal to my sense of celebration. When we take the time to set our table in a special way, it immediately gives us a sense of caring. It gives us a warm feeling and reminds us of the feast yet to come. The mood of these tables can be changed by the colors used but the general sense of something special about to come remains. When we let ourselves believe that table setting is not worth the effort we are cheating ourselves out of that caring feeling it automatically conveys.
